Sports floors and retractable seating: why compatibility and quality matters
August 11, 2020

Modern, retractable seating systems can transform a hall into an auditorium in an instant, but cutting corners can end badly for multipurpose sports floors.

Built to withstand the punishment dished out from thousands upon thousands of feet over the course of decades, sports floors would appear fairly uncomplicated on face value. It’s just a floor, right? Well, yes and no. When it comes to the lifespan and performance of sports flooring, it’s all in the detail.

Not all floors are created equal

Sports flooring is manufactured and installed for very specific purposes, and as a result, it must respond predictably and reliably. They’re dynamic, complex and responsive structures, with multiple layers and load bearing abilities for absorbing impacts. Sports floors are engineered to deform under loading and impact to help avoid sports injuries, but they mustn’t deform in such a way that impacts on adjacent users (like gymnastics equipment).

How much can a floor bear?

And just like gymnastics, it’s all about achieving the right balance. While sports floors are primarily designed for loadings imposed from running and jumping, they must also be able to deal with repeated loadings and motions from heavy equipment like tables and chairs. Take retractable seating systems for example — if compatibility and quality take a back seat when speccing up such a project, very expensive mistakes can occur.

“Inferior seating products with cheap plastic wheels can damage floors irreparably — we’ve seen this happen, and it’s not pretty…”

Compatible, unflappable

Aura adheres to best practice industry standards defined in European codes. These standards cover tolerances, stretch, and resistances to indentation across a variety of surfaces when we’re considering seating compatibility with floors. On a practical level, we always ensure that the quality of the seating systems we use fall within these codes in Australian conditions. We look for features that prevent damage to floors from repeated use, and systems that use robust engineering for uncomplicated and seamless performance.

Simply the best

From our experience, nothing compares to Auditoria’s retractable seating solutions — their high quality systems are flexible, durable and easy to use. Compared to the alternatives, the quality of Auditoria’s tailored retractable systems makes a huge difference to the longevity and performance of a sports floor. Details like European engineered soft wheels allow the low-impact systems to glide effortlessly across floors without issue.

Enduring quality

Aura’s multi-purpose sports floors are expected to perform consistently from school level all the way up to elite sports, and so are our compatible seating systems. It pays to go with quality when pairing up seating and flooring systems — with a longer lifespan, less ongoing maintenance, and happier outcomes, it makes a lot of sense.
